2011 was a pretty cool and busy year for us so I thought I would make a 2 minute slide show of the highlights…

Thirty-first in the series Get close to God

Come and go back in time with me and visit an amazing scene: thousands of people flocking to see a man who is healing diseases, casting out demons, and raising the dead.

After a while, it’s getting late, and since Jesus is not holding this event in a stadium with concession stands, his disciples are about to send everyone home to eat.  But then their leader says, “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!”  They said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”  This is only enough to feed one family, not thousands!

Jesus tells everyone to sit down on the grass, takes the loaves and fish, looks up to heaven, blesses the food, and gives it to the disciples to hand out to everyone.  After about five thousand men plus women and children eat all they want, there are twelve full baskets left over!

Matthew records in chapter 14 that immediately after this he made the disciples get into a boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the crowds home.  He then went up on a mountain for some alone time to pray.

Later that night he made a surprise visit to the disciples who were way out to sea, battling the wind and the waves.  They were terrified, seeing what they thought was a ghost, walking toward them on the water.  As soon as Jesus got into the boat, the wind stopped.  As soon as they got ashore, Jesus was recognized, word got out, and another round of healing began.

Jesus went up to a mountain again in the next chapter, but it wasn’t long before he was spotted, and once again “large crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and He healed them.”  (verse 30)

Jesus then called his disciples to him, and said, “I feel compassion for the people, because they have remained with me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.”

Incredibly, in spite of what they witnessed such a short time ago, they asked Jesus,  “Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd?”  And once again, Jesus fed thousands of people with a few loaves and fish, with many full baskets left over.

I used to wonder how the disciples could have asked such a stupid question, until I began to realize that I was doing the very same thing.  Time after time the Lord would come to my rescue, getting me out of jam after jam, yet I would still nervously wring my hands in despair with every new challenge.  I still get anxious at times about things, but it helps to remember that my God has a track record that proves his faithfulness can be counted on.

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
there is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
as Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Thomas O. Chisholm, 1923
