The Tombs

Posted: April 8, 2011 in Candle Lights

When I read about the wild man of the Gadarenes, I get a picture in my mind of how he might have looked.  I see a man that is filthy, bearded, and naked; a man whose body is covered with scars from the constant “cutting of himself with stones” (Mark 5:5).  I can hear the sounds of his crying penetrating each day and night (Mark 5:5).  Luke 8:27 tells us that he “neither abode in any house, but in the tombs”.

It occurred to me that there are times when we dwell in the tombs.  They may not be tombs carved out of stone, but they are still where the dead lie.  Anytime we let our hearts and minds dwell in a place that is outside of the Lord’s peace and will, we are living in a tomb.  The tomb can be bitterness, an unforgiving heart, hate, fear, anger, worry or depression.  These are just a few for they indeed are “Legion” (Mark 5:9).

We do not have to live in the tombs.  We can choose to take our eyes off self and put them on Jesus.  Just as the wild man of the Gadarenes saw Jesus and ran to Him (Mark 5:6), we can also.  Just as his deliverance came, ours will, too.  Then we can sit at the feet of Jesus in our “right mind” (Luke 8:35).

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee:  because he trusteth in thee.”  Isaiah 26:3
