If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you – Jesus, John 15:7

Have you ever wondered how King David came to be “a man after God’s own heart?”  Or how he was so passionately in love with and captivated by his heavenly Father?  His psalms are full of his soul that was thirsting, clinging, and longing for his Creator.  What was David’s secret?  We know he pursued God relentlessly, “Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face continually” (Psalm 105:4,) and worshipped him often “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth” (Psalm 34:1,) but there is something else he did as well, and he devoted the longest chapter in the Bible to explain it to us.

If you need some good reasons to read your Bible, check out Psalm 119.  David cherished God’s precepts, statutes, commands, and testimonies so much he said in verse 97, “Oh, how I love Your law.  I meditate on it all day long.”  He depended on it for advice, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (verse 105)  David knew the way to stay close to God and live right was to not only read scripture but to commit it to memory, to know it by heart:

Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You.  (Psalm 119:11)

Jesus used and quoted scripture often: “It is written, man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” and “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit” are just two examples that come to mind.

Would you like to have your prayers answered?  Jesus said “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” (John 15:7)  There it is again-God’s word needs to be in us, filling our hearts and minds.  That’s actually a prerequisite for prayer.  Would you like to have more faith?  “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”  (Romans 10:17)

If Jesus wants us to abide in him and to be his friend, that probably involves some dialog with him occasionally, right?  But how do you carry on a conversation with someone who won’t talk back?  Well, he does, actually, in his word, the Bible.  The more scripture you have stored up in your head, the more you can hear what the Lord’s take and advice is on many situations and whenever you need hope and encouragement, it’s as close as a verse on your lips.  It’s like feeding a program data to enable it to act a certain way under certain conditions.  Would you like to hear from God?  Speak his words out loud and bask in his glory.

You may know a lot of verses, but I have really struggled with the process.  It’s fairly easy to memorize a verse or two in the morning but in a few hours it just vaporizes into thin air.  Recently, however, I remembered a method I used for my kids when they were small.  I gave them one verse for each day of the week.  To help them remember what the verse was for which day, I chose a key word for each day, like “Near”, for “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”  I had them recite the verses every day for years until they could say them in their sleep!  So, I tried it myself awhile back for some verses concerning getting close to God, and guess what?  It worked!  The key is repetition.  To avoid vaporization, I had to keep reciting it throughout the day and when that day came around again I kept at it until I got it.  The hardest part was remembering where they were found.  I posted the verses where I would see them often.

So, go find seven verses that really speak to you for Sunday through Saturday.  After you get those under your belt and you start to feel ambitious, select twelve more for monthly verses and a verse for life for the year.  That will give you a total of 20!

Eventually, I was able to rattle off the entire week of verses.  When I got those down I added more, but it looks like I’ve topped out at three per day.  What helped me to recall them was to remember the theme for that day since I grouped them that way, such as “Praise,” for Sunday, and the first letter of each verse.  I can’t say this has been an easy process, but it has deepened my walk with the Lord.

I will list the verses that I came up with in a future post, since they’ve been especially helpful in my quest to get closer to God.  In the meantime, let me know what has worked for you.

There are a lot of things I can do with my time, but Jesus said:

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.  (Mathew 24:35)

The Goings

We were standing in the kitchen looking at the woods behind my brother and sister-in-law’s home when he appeared in the clearing.  He was beautiful, but he quickly retreated back to the protection of the woods.  Anxious to see him again, we kept our eyes on the woods hoping he would come out.

After the fox retreated, Robert, my niece’s boyfriend, was the first to spot the fox among the trees and underbrush.  I strained to get another glimpse of the fox but could not see him even though Robert pointed to the area where the fox was moving through the woods.  My frustration was mounting when Robert said, “Don’t look for the fox, look for the movement.”  When I looked for the movement of the underbrush rather than looking for the fox himself I was able to see him.

Robert’s advice reminded me of the instructions the Lord gave to David in II Samuel 5:23 & 24.  The Philistines were on the move, spreading out and the battle would soon be on, but the Lord told David to take his army, go by the mulberry trees, and wait.  The Lord told David that when he heard “a going” [movement] in the tops of the mulberry trees…bestir [rouse to action] thyself…for then shall the Lord go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.”  David’s army was assured a victory.

There is a going in the world today.  All we have to do is watch the news.  The enemy’s army is spreading out and is advancing.  Evil is now called good and good is called evil.  The waters are muddy, and at times we may have trouble seeing the enemy but we can hear the sounds and see the movement of his army.  The sounds are getting louder and the movement is getting faster, but even so, those in the Lord’s army need not be afraid.  We are to “bestir” or get ready, but the Lord will “go out” before us, and the enemy will be defeated.  Our victory is assured!

Lord, help me to share the Gospel so that those You bring into my life can get ready.
